Birth doulas are professionals at offering reassurance and information to women about childbirth options.  Doulas realize that birth is a pivotal experience that mothers remember throughout their entire lives.  They understand the emotional needs and physiological changes of a mother in labor.

The doula stays with the woman throughout her labor and birth providing emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint.  She provides information to the mother so that she is able to make truly informed decisions during pregnancy and labor.  The birth doula also assists the woman's partner with participating in the labor and birth experience to whatever degree the couple desires.

Forceps or vacuum use by 41%

Length of labor by 25%

Dissatisfaction with birthing experience by 33%

My Services

  1.   I prefer to meet for at least two prenatal birth visits to become acquainted with you and your partner or support person.  During the first visit we discuss your birthing preferences and share information and history.  I give lots of information and handouts with each visit and I also have an extensive library of books and DVD's for loan.  During the second visit, we practice birthing positions, discuss your birth plan and talk about fears or concerns that you or your partner have surrounding your birth.  I am available at any time to answer questions and concerns.

  1.   Support during labor will begin when you call that you need me.  I will come to your home or meet you at the hospital as you prefer.  I stay with you throughout your entire labor and postpartum until 1-2 hours after the baby is born.

  1.   I prefer to visit you within 2-3 days after your birth and then again 1-2 weeks later to support you in breastfeeding or any other need that you may have.  This is a good time to review your birth story and discuss any questions or concerns that you may have regarding your birth.

  1.   I will provide childbirth education classes to individuals and couples for an additional fee.

  1.   My service area includes the greater Kansas City area including Overland Park, Olathe, Leavenworth, Liberty, Independence, and Blue Springs.

Doulas emphasize the normal course of labor, childbirth and postpartum and include emotional and physical comfort measures in this process. The role of the birth doula is one of non-medical support.
